Unemployment - Week III

by HyperbolicHyperbally 1/29/2007 2:48:00 PM

Well another week has gone by and I bombed another interview. Frown. I obviously need to work on my interviewing skills since I keep failing. Needless to say I didn't get the job at the insurance company. I failed the object orient a Chicken question as well as the *light bulb problem. Cry I need to really have answers for "Why should we hire you" "Describe a problem you had and how you overcame it" , "Object orient this cheese" (Why?), "What are you most proud of" (I don't know... failing at life?) "what did you do at X" (I did stuff) so I can rattle off answers without blinking an eye. I'm not good as selling myself, which shouldn't be too surprising considering how things have gone lately. I'm usually not comfortable talking about myself and I often consider the things I've done to be pretty small in the great scheme of things.

On the other hand maybe all those employers thought my hair was too long or I'd bring down the diversity of their workplace and thats why they don't want me. The world is a strange place, but I've heard of lamer reasons.

On a positive note that bizzare company Frank has created asked me to find _admin for many of the old sites we did at EIS so I earned myself $22 before taxes.

*In the basement there are three light switches in the OFF position. Each switch controls one of three light bulbs on floor above. You may move any of the switches but you may only go upstairs to inspect the bulbs one time. How can you determine the switch for each bulb with one inspection? (solution)

Greece: Secrets of the Past

by HyperbolicHyperbally 1/29/2007 2:37:00 PM

Saturday was the unofficial anime meetup get-together (as opposed the official monthly meetup) and since this was a Cleveland month we went off to the Great Lakes Science Center.  This was probably my fourth time to the science center, but the first time that I went to the Imax Theater (and only the second Imax film I've seen).  Anyway, enough expostion, on with the review.

The movie started in Santorini and gave and spent a lot time talking about the ancient people who lived there.  Many Beautiful  shots of this Mediterranean Island were show and it very much made one wish to visit the agean.  They showed the archologist putting old frescos together like puzzles and gave a description of the eruption that destroyed the city.  Finally towards the end of the movie they moved to Athens to talk about classical Greece a bit and to show a computer reconstruction of the Parthenon.

The Good:

Beautiful shots of Santorini and the Parthenon and the sea.  Also it was nifty to see all the buildings of the town on Santorini built on top of one another.  It seamed to get around in the town you did as much up and down as right and left.

The Bad:

The movie was little light on Infomation and they seemed to conflate the people of Santorini with the classical Greeks even though they were from different time peroids (700 year difference) and areas. I suppose it all depends on the meaning of Greek. Later during thier discussion of Classical Greece, they claimed that Athens wars ruined by war, which is not unreasonable in and of itself, but they don't say how?  (Such as the failed Syracuse expedition, or the Great plague that Ravaged Athens)

In conclusion: the Movie was a nice visually and it was nice to actually see the leftovers of what most likely inspired the Atlantis myth, but don't expect too learn much from a historical point.  And in the movie's defense, it needs be interesting for a general audience including children who most likely would not be interested in more detail.

(De)Motivational Poster

by HyperbolicHyperbally 1/26/2007 2:04:00 PM

My first Demotivator Yay, I finally got around to making a (De)Motivational poster. It's extremely easy even for someone as artistically lacking as me. Just go to diy.despair.com.

All you need is an image and and idea and you can create a poster of your own.

RahXephon the Musical

by HyperbolicHyperbally 1/24/2007 1:45:00 PM

Rah Xephon as most people seem to know is a Mecha anime involving a Mecha of the same name. I suppose I should start with disclaimer that I'm not a big fan of Mecha anime and I fear this has colored my outlook somewhat. The anime starts out following around our hero Ayato while Tokyo is attacked by unknown people. Likewise our hero is also attacked by unknown thugs with green blood, but is saved by girl in sunglasses, who turns out to be our heroine. And thus the show starts with a very promising beginning with lots of mysteries, Such as why is our hero important, who are these aliens, why is our heroine attracted to Ayato, why are there Mecha in this anime?

The Good:

The mystery is very nice and even better things are properly wrapped up in the end. So I defiantly give lots props for the Into and the ending episodes.(though I could done with less mecha sex in the ending.) The main Heroine is pretty cool, and her willingness to put up with our hero's mood swings is quite amazing. Unfortunately she devolves into a lowly love interest towards the end.

The Bad:

The middle of the Series seems to have far to many Dolem of the week episodes. I almost gave up on there series around episode ten because it seemed like it wasn't going anywhere. I guess if I were a Mecha maniac I'd have loved seeing the Rah Xephon Own the Dolems, but sadly that wasn't the case. The other bad thing involved the fact that I usually was happy when a character died since I found many of the minor characters to be on the annoying side. In conclusion: Rah Xephon is quite entertaining as long as you can get through the Dolem of the week episodes.

Unemployment - Week II

by HyperbolicHyperbally 1/15/2007 1:36:00 PM

Things were rather crazy last week after posting my Resume on Monster, I was inundated with calls from various Technical placement agencies.  Needless to say I was not expecting my phone to ring off the hook.  I believe at the moment I've met with something like six of these agencies and doesn't count the two or three from Pittsburgh that I turned down.  I even had one call me from San Diego, very odd.

I've passed up on one job and been interviewed for three others; one of which, insurance company that I'd accept if they offered me the job. In addition I have phone screening this afternoon and another interview on Monday. Then there was the guy I was supposed to meet yesterday, but then it fell through.... And I've been contacted by Frank and Dave separately with offers of some possible contract work. This is year has certainly been interesting. I suppose I should try to find a point to this post, but maybe the point is just to rant a bit. It's not as if my blog has any innate rationality as it is. The contract ideas from my former coworkers sound interesting, since the extra money could definitely be helpful. I wonder if I could just work on Franks stuff until I find a more permanent job. On the other hand, if I do get a permanent job do I really want to spend so much more time working? Any of the jobs that I've run across lately will more than cover my expenses... and what to do aboutmy blog if I'm working all the time? I still haven't properly improved it so that it's no longer ugly.

You Discover a New Year

by HyperbolicHyperbally 1/1/2007 12:00:00 AM
"I waste it with my crossbow!" Goals for the new year. Post more on my blog than in 2006. Also put something other than coming soon on my website. Then maybe someone other than me might actually visit this place.
